Deforestation not only is a devastating risk to climate change but is also a business risk to all farmers, importers and food product companies that do business with EU countries and soon 141 countries. These entities need to assess the impact of the new EU regulations and deforestation to protect their supply chains. 

Dimitra has built a deforestation detection system which is embedded in our existing platforms and also as a standalone system. The system generates certificates of compliance to confirm that each origin farm complies with the no-deforestation regulations along with other local requirements.

The system has two key designs: one for individual farmers that wish to have a record of compliance; two for corporations that buy or import coffee, cocoa, soy, palm oil, cattle, timber or rubber or their derivatives. 

The first step after registration is to record the origin farm’s information, which can be done in under one-minute. After the farm’s details are entered, the farm’s exact geo-location is registered on a map, and you begin creating a virtual boundary around the land known as a geo-fence. 

Now that the farm is registered on a map, you can request a report on the area you’ve geofenced. In a matter of minutes, the system will identify any deforestation that has occurred after December 2020 through to the most recent image taken by the satellite. 

After a deforestation report is generated, companies can request a certificate which identifies the total percentage of forest loss in the area and the number of new trees planted. Additionally, if the company is using one of Dimitra’s farm and crop management apps, we can identify the shipment’s compliance with the local agriculture laws such as waste water disposal and pesticide usage. 

In addition to shipment certification, the system helps operators identify deforestation across the areas they operate in to quantify the risk they have in their supply chains and make informed decisions.

Each certificate is recorded on the blockchain with a unique transaction ID and can be shared with stakeholders in a supply chain with a QR code or URL.
